Explore some of the Pacific Northwest's most inspiring active adventures through the eyes of a Seattle-based travel curator.

Pacific Northwest Adventure
As a travel curator, I spend much of my year thinking about faraway places.
I'm researching walking safaris in Africa, village-to-village hikes through Switzerland, remote ecolodges in Patagonia, and culinary journeys across Japan. It's easy to become captivated by destinations that require multiple flights and a passport full of stamps.
Yet every year, I'm reminded that some of the most extraordinary adventures I've experienced are right here at home.
Living in Seattle gives me access to one of the most diverse outdoor playgrounds on the planet. Within just a few hours, I can find myself kayaking alongside orcas, hiking beneath glaciers, cycling through wine country, or walking a wild stretch of coastline where the only sounds are crashing waves and distant seabirds.
The Pacific Northwest isn't simply a beautiful place. It's a destination that invites participation. It rewards curiosity. It encourages us to move, explore, and reconnect with the natural world in ways that feel increasingly rare.
Here are a few of the adventures that continue to inspire me year after year.

Hiking Among Giants in the North Cascades
North Cascades National Park
Often overshadowed by more famous mountain destinations, the North Cascades remain one of America's great hidden treasures.
With jagged peaks, turquoise alpine lakes, and more glaciers than any U.S. national park outside Alaska, the landscape feels surprisingly wild and untouched.
What I love most is the sense of discovery.
You can spend an entire day hiking through old-growth forests before emerging above the treeline to panoramic views that rival anything I've experienced in the Alps. Trails like Cascade Pass offer accessible introductions, while more ambitious routes reward experienced hikers with true backcountry immersion.
On many hikes, you'll encounter more mountain goats than people.
In a world where many destinations feel increasingly crowded, that kind of solitude is a luxury.
Sea Kayaking Through the San Juan Islands
San Juan Islands
Few experiences capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest better than gliding across calm waters as the morning fog slowly lifts.
The San Juan Islands offer one of North America's premier sea kayaking destinations, combining rugged coastlines, protected waterways, and remarkable wildlife encounters.
I've spent days paddling through quiet coves, watching harbor seals surface nearby and bald eagles soar overhead.
And then there are the whales.
While sightings can never be guaranteed, encountering orcas in their natural environment is one of those travel moments that stays with you forever.
What makes the experience special isn't simply the wildlife. It's the pace. Kayaking encourages you to slow down and engage with your surroundings in a way few other activities can.
Walking the Wild Beaches of the Olympic Peninsula
Olympic National Park
There are places in the world that make you feel wonderfully small.
The Olympic Coast is one of them.
Massive sea stacks rise from the Pacific Ocean. Driftwood the size of city buses lines the shore. Dense forests meet rugged beaches in a landscape that feels almost prehistoric.
One of my favorite ways to experience this region is through multi-day coastal hiking.
Unlike traditional mountain treks, these journeys combine beaches, tidal crossings, hidden coves, and remote campsites. Every day feels different.
It's adventurous without requiring technical skills, yet immersive enough to feel like a true expedition.
For travelers who love active exploration but aren't necessarily seeking extreme adventure, the Olympic Peninsula strikes a remarkable balance.

Cycling Washington Wine Country
Walla Walla
Adventure doesn't always require mountain summits.
Some of my favorite journeys combine movement, culture, and incredible food.
The rolling landscapes around Walla Walla provide exactly that.
Cycling between vineyards, small farms, and charming downtown neighborhoods creates a deeper connection to the destination than simply driving from tasting room to tasting room.
The terrain is approachable, the scenery is beautiful, and the culinary experiences rival many internationally recognized wine destinations.
For travelers seeking an active journey that blends wellness with indulgence, it's one of the Pacific Northwest's most underrated experiences.
The Magic of a Hut-to-Hut Trek
While Europe often receives attention for its famous hut systems, the Pacific Northwest has quietly developed its own collection of guided trekking experiences.
Multi-day hikes through Washington's alpine wilderness allow travelers to immerse themselves in nature during the day while returning to comfortable accommodations each evening.
These journeys offer many of the rewards of international trekking without the long-haul flight.
For busy professionals or travelers testing the waters before embarking on a larger adventure abroad, they're an ideal introduction.
Why These Adventures Matter
The older I get, the more I realize that meaningful travel isn't defined by distance.
It's defined by how deeply we engage with a place.
Some of my most memorable travel experiences have happened halfway around the world. Others have happened within a few hours of my front door.
The Pacific Northwest reminds me that adventure doesn't always require an international itinerary. Sometimes it begins with a ferry ride, a hiking trail, a kayak paddle, or a winding road leading toward the mountains.
As travel curators, we spend a great deal of time helping clients discover remarkable destinations across the globe. Yet we're equally passionate about helping travelers experience the extraordinary places that exist much closer to home.
Because sometimes the next transformative journey isn't across an ocean.
It's right here in our own backyard.

Ready to Discover the Pacific Northwest Differently?
The beauty of the Pacific Northwest isn't simply found in its landscapes—it's found in the moments those landscapes create. The quiet satisfaction of reaching an alpine ridge after a challenging climb. The thrill of spotting wildlife from a kayak. The conversations shared around a lodge fireplace after a day spent exploring trails, coastlines, or mountain passes.
These are the experiences that linger long after the journey ends.
Whether you're dreaming of a multi-day hiking adventure, a cycling journey through wine country, a wildlife-focused escape in the San Juan Islands, or a thoughtfully designed active getaway tailored to your interests, the Pacific Northwest offers extraordinary opportunities to reconnect with nature, challenge yourself, and experience this remarkable region in a deeper way.
